Silence

6:04 · Nezu Temple

At six in the morning there is no one at the temple. The gravel is still wet, and footsteps on it are the only sound in the whole courtyard.

I didn't come here to pray — I'm not a believer. I came because this is the only place in Tokyo where no one asks me to understand anything. The engineer in me falls silent. There is nothing to explain.

alley · Golden Gai

A bar with six seats. The owner doesn't speak English, I don't speak Japanese. He pours, I drink. That is enough.

For twenty years I built systems where misunderstanding is a bug to be fixed. Here, misunderstanding turned out not to be a bug but a form of respect: we don't need to explain ourselves to spend an hour together.

last train

The car is almost empty. Someone sleeps, someone watches the running lights through the window. No one speaks. The city exhales.

In Systems I broke this train down as orchestration with a two-minute SLA. All true. But at midnight the same system becomes a place where you can sit in silence beside strangers and feel safe. That is no longer about the timetable.

静けさを説明しようとすると、静けさが逃げる。

Try to explain silence — and it slips away.
